As time goes on, we have more and more enquiries from organisations who want a presence on the internet but don't know how to get started. Most of these enquiries come from people with little or no, technical knowledge and most are from the voluntary sector. I am here to tell you that there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Developments in recent years has made it possible to create web sites which are under the control of the site owner rather than the techno-whizz who created them. What this means is that individuals and organisations can now have a website which they can update themselves. Many people reading this will already know that this is an important issue as there are many websites out there which have not been updated for years. This is usually because the owners are not able to do it themselves and it becomes a dificult and costly business to get things changed. Technology has moved on and it is now possible for site owners to update their own sites.

What I am talking about here is 'Content Managed Websites'. The basic layout of the site is controled by a template, so all the user has to worry about is the content of the site.

These have been around for a long time but have always been very expensive. This has now changed, thanks to the open source community who have developed software such as Mambo and Joomla. This software (which is free) makes it possible and practical for small organisations to have an effective and up to date website without needing  an IT department to maintain it.
